Baby care and baby–mother care refers to the comprehensive care provided to a newborn, infant, and mother during pregnancy, childbirth, the immediate postpartum period, and early infancy. The health of the mother and baby is closely connected, so nursing care should focus on both of them as a unit whenever possible.
The newborn requires warmth, nutrition, hygiene, protection from infection, safe sleep, and careful observation. The mother requires physical recovery, adequate nutrition and rest, emotional support, breastfeeding assistance, hygiene, monitoring for complications, and education about caring for herself and her baby.
The overall aim is to promote safe motherhood, healthy newborn development, successful breastfeeding, bonding, prevention of illness, and early recognition of danger signs.
